I want to start sewing – where should I begin?

Starting to sew can feel exciting. Where do I begin? What do I need? Where can I find what I need? If you’ve been thinking these same things, you’re not alone. I want to make starting to sew as easy as possible for you. In this post, you’ll find a clear and practical guide to help you get started without unnecessary confusion.

You don’t need perfect tools or prior experience to begin. It’s enough to start with the basics and move forward at your own pace.

Sewing Machine

First, of course, you need a sewing machine. You don’t necessarily need an expensive one, but I also don’t recommend buying the cheapest option available. A good sewing machine should be reliable and easy to use, so your motivation doesn’t fade due to avoidable frustrations.

If your budget is limited, I recommend looking for a good quality used sewing machine. You can often find them at flea markets or second-hand shops. Sewing machine stores also sell serviced, pre-owned machines, and they often allow you to test different models to find one that suits you.

If you don’t want to buy your own machine right away, you can borrow one from a friend or family member. In some areas, libraries also offer access to sewing machines.

Quality Sewing Supplies

In addition to a sewing machine, you will need thread and needles. Choosing quality supplies makes a noticeable difference in both the sewing experience and the final result. I personally recommend Gutermann sewing thread and Schmetz or Organ needles. Always choose the needle based on your fabric, as the wrong needle can quickly make sewing feel difficult.

You will also need fabric scissors and paper scissors. For fabric scissors, any sharp pair that has only been used for fabric will work well. For example, basic Fiskars scissors are a good option. Scissors designed for fabric are usually slightly larger and shaped to glide smoothly along the table while cutting.

Fabric scissors should only be used for fabric, as cutting other materials will dull them and affect the quality of your cuts.

You will also need a few additional tools:

  • pins or sewing clips
  • a fabric marking pen
  • a measuring tape
  • a seam ripper

If you want to sew using patterns, you will also need a pattern and pattern paper. Any translucent material that allows you to trace the pattern will work. Many people use baking paper, disposable sheets, or construction plastic. I personally prefer pattern paper sold in sewing supply stores.

Then, of course, you need fabric. You can find it in fabric stores or second-hand shops, or you can repurpose something you already have at home.

For your first project, choose something simple but interesting, so the process feels motivating from the start.

You don’t have to know everything about sewing right away. The most important thing is to begin and allow yourself to learn along the way.

Hopefully, this guide helps you take your first steps into sewing with confidence.
