How to Use a Sewing Machine for Beginners – Let’s Get Started Together

It’s time to start sewing.
Or actually, before that, take a moment to get to know your sewing machine and how it works.

Spending a little time with your machine manual is truly worth it. It helps you understand the basic functions more quickly and makes everything feel much more approachable.

Once you’ve gone through the basics, set up your machine, choose the right needle, and thread it according to the instructions. If anything feels unclear, you can easily find helpful threading tutorials for most machines on YouTube.

Before jumping into your first project, give yourself some time to simply try things out.
Take a few fabric scraps and test different stitches and settings. Try a straight stitch, adjust the stitch length, and experiment with stretch stitches. You’ll quickly start to see how stitch width and thread tension affect the final result.

Try sewing on both knit and woven fabrics. Different materials behave in different ways, and even a small amount of testing will make your first project feel much easier.

You can also practice changing the presser foot and get familiar with the options your machine offers. It might feel unfamiliar at first, but it’s usually quick and simple, and learning it early will make many sewing techniques easier later on.

Take a moment to practice winding the bobbin as well. You can prepare a few bobbins with different thread colors you think you’ll use. And if you only have one or two, it’s easy to pick up more from sewing supply stores.

Spending just a little time getting comfortable with your machine will make your first real sewing project so much smoother.

Hopefully, this post makes it easier for you to sit down at your sewing machine and start trying things out.
